人は太古の昔から、言葉とともに生きてきました。
言葉によって意思や感情、想起する物事を他者へと伝達し、
生きていくことは、言葉を話したり聞いたりすることと分かちがたく、
それらの歩みは人の歴史そのものとも言えます。
そして、絵画についで近代に生み出された写真は、
言葉に取って代わるほどの共感性、瞬発性を有するビジュアルコミュニケーションツールとなり、
さまざまに変容しつつ、互いに補完関係を保ちながら存在してきました。
現在、インターネットを中心としたデジタル情報社会では、
言葉も写真もかつての威厳を失い、軽く、速く、遠くへと、瞬時に世界中を飛び交い、
ネット上の中空をノイズのように漂っています。
雑誌『写真』第三号では、写真と言葉の復権に着目し、
テーマを「スペル」としました。
スペルは、日本語では文字を綴ることを意味する「spelling」と同義で広く使われていますが、
英語では呪文や魔力といった意味を含む単語とされています。
写真も儀式めいた手法によって目にしたものを切り取り、
人々に伝播していく感染呪術のようなものなのかもしれません。
人は言葉なしに写真を考えたり、語ることはできず、
写真と言葉はどちらも世界との距離を示すツール、記号であると同時に、
その連なりが人と人とを結びつけ、時には人々の心を揺るがし、
世界を覆う多様性、複雑さをつなぎとめる力を含んでいます。
今号では、写真と言葉の関係が歴史的にどう展開してきたかを示しつつ、
現代日本写真をめぐる新しい糸口を提示します。
誰もが気軽に写真を撮ることができるようになったいまだからこそ、
写真家が紡ぐ言葉、写真の周辺で語られる言葉、写真そのものが語りかけるものなど、
今号で紹介する写真と言葉が魔力となって、次なるアクションの一つの契機となれば幸いです。

The theme of the third issue "Spell", focuses on the comeback of the relationship between photography and word. It explores the words woven by photographers, the words spoken around photography, and the messages that photography itself communicates. We hope that the photography and words introduced in this issue will serve as an opportunity for the next action with their magic. The cover and opening feature a new work by one of Japan's leading photographers, Kikuji Kawada, titled Los Caprichos: Near Far. The frontispiece showcases works by Naohiro Utagawa, Yuki Onodera, Yoko Kusano, Seiji Kumagai, Chieko Shiraishi, and Gozo Yoshimasu. Additionally, there is a special collaboration between award-winning novelist Tomoka Shibasaki and photographer Ryudai Takano, as well as an interview with Alec Soth. This 296-page issue is packed with things worth seeing, diving deep into the "spelll" between photography and words.

“Spell,” the third issue of Sha Shin magazine, is devoted to the relationship between photography and words.
Words have been an essential part of human existence since the dawn of humanity. They allow us to convey feelings, thoughts, and messages to other people. The reception and transmitting of words is inseparable from the way we live our lives, and our language tells our history. Photography, a relatively recent invention, grew into a visual medium whose immediacy and capacity for emotion can supersede the powers of written or spoken words. As photography proceeds to evolve as an artistic medium, photography and language continue to influence each other in various ways.
In this age of globally-connected digital information, both photography and words have lost some of their former gravitas. They may reach the furthest, farthest corners of the world within moments but also fill up the voids of the internet with noise.
In Japanese, the word “spell” refers exclusively to “spelling” (i.e., the sequence of letters that compose a word), but its English meaning also encompasses magic enchantments and incantations. Given its power to capture what the eye sees and to share it with other people, photography, too, seems almost like magic.
We need words to speak and think about photography. Photography and language symbolize and bridge our distance from the world. They allow us to connect with other people and to stimulate their minds and hearts. They possess the power to link the world in its complexity and diversity. In this issue, we try to examine historical connections between photography and language and to present new ways to engage with contemporary Japanese photography.
In a world where anybody is able to take photographs with unprecedented ease, we hope that the photographs and written words in this third volume of Sha Shin magazine—words by photographers, words about photographs, and the language of photography itself—may unleash their magic powers and serve as inspiration for future actions.
