巻頭言
雑誌『写真』第四号では、写真と風土をめぐる関係に着目し、テーマを「テロワール」としました。
人はそれぞれの風土を生きています。それは生まれ育った環境や自然、土地の風習などの影響だけではなく、ある時どこかで誰かと出会い、学びの経験や成長の機会、歓喜の瞬間や深い悲しみの時間といったすべてが蓄積され、染み込んでいって一人の人間としての価値観や信念、人格形成に至ります。そしてそれがある土地、ある集団と交錯したときに、その土地固有の文化や風習が見えてくるのではないでしょうか。
日本各地の風景は均質化を辿る一方で、伝統的な風土が完全に失われたわけではありません。日本列島は南北に細長く、山や海に囲まれた豊かな自然環境のもと、人々の暮らしには季節感や自然との共生を重んじる生活文化が未だ色濃く残っています。また日本は地震や台風、火山噴火などの自然災害が多く、その度に土地の文化や風習は更新され複雑に変化しつつも、新しいものと古いものとが独自の特色を持って継承されています。
「テロワール（terroir）」とは、フランス語で「土地の味わい」という意味を持ち、ワインや農産物などの食品文化において、土地の風土がその味や特徴に大きく影響することを意味します。
今号では、日本各地で撮影、制作を続ける写真家たちが捉えた風土をめぐる写真をテロワールとして一望し、風土や環境が彼ら自身にどのように影響を与え、新たな表現となって立ち現れてくるのかを提示します。また彼らの作品を通して、現在の日本各地の景観や、風土や文化に対する問題意識や思いを共有します。
土地の持つ記憶と歴史に写真家たちがどう向き合ってきたのか、ジャンルを超えた執筆陣の論考やコラムのもと、写真と風土の関係を列島規模で俯瞰することで、自分たちが生きる地域、環境に対する理解を深めるきっかけとなるはずです。加速度的に変わりゆく現代においても、我々人間が有機的な生命体である限り、人と土地、人と人とは交感し続け、写真はその土地の手触りを伝える語り部として、重要な役割と魅力を有しています。写真家たちが各地でとらえた写真が、それぞれの味わいとなって読者に届けば幸いです。

In the July 20th release of Shashin magazine, Vol. 4, titled "Terroir," we will focus on the relationship between photography and the local environment. Through the works of photographers created across various regions of Japan, we aim to share insights and reflections on the landscapes of present-day Japan, as well as the issues and thoughts surrounding its terroir and culture. This issue is filled with works, essays, and interviews, including a new work and interview with Ryuichi Ishikawa, a recipient of the Kimura Ihei Award, and a collaboration between Naoki Ishikawa and Toshiharu Ito.

In Terroir, the fourth volume of Sha Shin magazine, we focus on the relationship between photography and the environmental features of a region.
We live our lives shaped by our own terroir — by the natural conditions of the region in which we were born and raised, the people we meet, the experiences we make, our chances to learn and grow, and our moments of joy and profound sadness, all of which influence and shape our very being, our beliefs, and our character. When these individual experiences intersect with the inherent characteristics of a landscape or community, we begin to see the formation of customs and cultures that are both unique and tied to a specific region.
Although Japan’s landscapes continue to undergo a certain homogenization, its traditional terroir has not been completely lost. The Japanese archipelago features rich natural surroundings between its mountains and seas that have encouraged an awareness of the changing seasons and a deep-rooted appreciation for a harmonious coexistence with nature. Further, the relentless renewal dictated by Japan’s frequent natural disasters, from earthquakes to typhoons and volcanic eruptions, has forced a complex evolution of local cultures and resulted in a unique blend of innovation and tradition.
Terroir is a French term that refers to the distinctive character of a region and its strong impact on the characteristics of wine and agricultural products.
In our fourth issue, we try to provide a panoramic overview of terroir captured throughout Japan by photographers who continuously explore the ways in which land, locality, and environment shape their own work and foster the emergence of new forms of expression. Through their photographs, we aim to share our own awareness and thoughts on the diverse landscapes and cultures in regions throughout Japan.
As we examine the ways in which photographers engage with locally embedded memories and histories, and explore the relationship between photography and its environment, we are bound to discover opportunities to better understand our own connections with the places that surround us. Regardless of the technical advances of our rapidly developing world, as living organisms we will always be part of a multifarious conversation with other beings and the land around us. Photography, with its unique powers to convey the essence and unique feeling of places, remains a tremendously versatile medium for telling important stories. It is our sincere hope that the photographs presented in this issue manage to convey the unique terroir of the environments in which they were captured.
